Self Reflection
After thirty years of serving in both State and Federal law enforcement, I’ve witnessed the full spectrum of human experience, love, hate, life, death, and things words can’t fully capture or explain.
In January of 2019, I received the kind of call no one is ever prepared for, the loss of a family member, a close friend, or a fellow officer.
I have experienced too many suicide calls for service, not to mention my father, my older brother both tragic losses to suicide, but I was not prepared to hear that my close friend had just taken his life.
The pain. The confusion. The question that echoes endlessly in my mind: “Why?” And the only person who could answer that question… is no longer here.
I found myself asking: Did I really know them? Truly know them?
The honest answer: I guess not.
Despite all my years of training and education…
I still lacked the mental firepower to recognize the signs of a friend, a brother crying out for help.
